Other culprits rounding out that list - based on total fat contributed to the American diet - are: Margarine. Salad dressings and mayonnaise. Cheese. Milk. Cakes. Cookies. Quick breads and doughnuts. Poultry. Oils. Yeast bread. Chips and popcorn. Sausages. Eggs. Nuts and seeds. Butter. Ice cream.

    The list is "distressing" for its health-harming amounts of saturated and other types of fats, says integrative medicine specialist Weil in his new book, The Healthy Kitchen, co-authored with chef Rosie Daley.

    Take the top two foods, for example: Beef is loaded with saturated animal fat, which increases cholesterol and blood fats and ups the odds of heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems; and margarine is a processed vegetable oil with similarly scary health risks.
